Clutter Clearance with Alison Parry by Tilly Black

As a diehard hoarder with a filing cabinet that's so full it refuses to open or close, I was more than a little nervous when Alison set to work surveying my groaning study. Regarding my personal letters archive (I've kept every one), Alison asked whether I really needed them for the future or could they be stopping new people and experiences coming in to my life? In three hours - that went by in an enjoyable flash - we trawled through my entire home office, Alison making creative suggestions for labelling and sorting, and talking about the 'Cosmic Banking System', ie the more we can give to good causes (and what you let go of Alison takes away to recycle with Computers for Africa and Children's Scrapstore amongst others), the more space we have to receive new things.

Rather than a brutal experience of decluttering, I found working with Alison a nurturing and reflective process during which I felt empowered to let go of a mountain of paperwork and numerous redundant computers, printers and related paraphernalia (which Alison took away for me to various recycling places). I felt a load lifting and a new energy flowing through my home (not to mention my mind). And two days later I found a brilliant and much needed laser printer on the street. So the Cosmic Banking System works!

'I am a freelance business training consultant and used to be a teacher', explains Deborah. 'I had accumulated a huge amount of paperwork and teaching resource material in my 20 year career in teaching, which was cluttering my study. Teachers are notorious hoarders - we don't throw anything away in case it might be useful! The result was that it was impossible to find anything and as I now work from home, it was getting fairly depressing.'

Alison visited Deborah for a three-hour session, during which she helped Deborah sort through all her paperwork, separating out the useful documents worth keeping and binning or shredding the rest. The Simply Sorted service also includes removing a carload of clutter at the end of the session. The result was tidy files and clutter-free shelves, perfect for keeping everything tucked away neatly. 'It was a very enjoyable, pleasant experience,' remarks Deborah. 'Alison is down to earth and interesting, and we got a lot done. Now I have managed to get one clearance job done, it has motivated me to tackle other tasks and it seems far less daunting. I would certainly recommend the Simply Sorted service to anyone who needs help getting organised'.

Pauline decided to enlist Alison's help in sorting out an under-stairs cupboard that had accumulated a lot of clutter over the years. 'Together we emptied the cupboard of its contents and worked our way through everything very methodically,' said Pauline. 'Alison was very easy to get on with and there was no pressure to throw things away. It was great to have help sorting it out, as it really needed doing. Alison sorted out and categorised things like light bulbs and DIY materials - it's nice to finally be able to find things!'

Pauline particularly liked the fact that Alison was able to find new homes for unwanted items - many of which were recycled or donated to charity. Some items went to St Peter's Hospice, lots of plastic carrier bags went to Amnesty International and tins of paint were taken away for recycling', explained Pauline. 'Also, Alison took my mother's old typewriter, which I had been reluctant to part with, to be fixed up and sent to Africa, so it feels good to know someone will be able to use it.'

'I was a little apprehensive prior to Alison's visit', admits Pauline. 'But it was a very positive experience. In fact, it has even motivated me to tackle other tasks, so I was very happy with the Simply Sorted experience.'
